The classic beauty of hardwood flooring works in almost any situation, from a traditional setting to an ultra modern contemporary. This versatile flooring material has been the choice of interior designers for years because of the level of warmth and beauty it can introduce into a room. A hardwood floor can become a main focal point of a room or fade completely into the background, accentuating an area’s different furnishings.
There are two basic types of hardwood flooring—solid wood and engineered wood. Solid wood flooring is the most common and is available in three basic types: strip flooring, widerwidth planking, and parquet flooring. Engineered wood is constructed with two or more layers of wood laminated together. The bottom layer can be made of a wood composite creating more stability in the product. The top layer is a veneer and can consist of many wood types such as oak, birch, maple, ash, cherry and more. Each species can vary greatly in appearance.
